Here are five musicals I am looking forward to seeing, either this year or, hopefully, in the near future, and why I simply can’t wait to see them. These are in no particular order.
1: Grease
Grease is a classic musical that I can’t wait to see. I have tickets for the tour at The Alexandra and have grown up watching the movie on TV with my mom at least once a year. I love the songs and costumes and it’s a show that both my mom and I have wanted to see on stage.
2: Phantom of the Opera
Despite my mixed feelings on Andrew Lloyd Webber, Phantom of the Opera is a musical theatre staple. I have never seen this live, but I have watched the film and the 25th Anniversary Royal Albert Hall recording. I adored the latter so much I went out of my way to buy it on DVD. Phantom of the Opera has beautiful costumes and songs, and teen me absolutely adored Christine and Raoul.
3: Next To Normal
Next To Normal has amazing reviews. That combined with the complex issues the musical deals with, some of which my family has dealt with in some way before, makes me want to experience this show in person. The characters seem real and the music sounds incredible and emotional. I have little else to say about this musical, because I know little else about it other than all the good things I’ve heard, but that is exactly why I want to see it.
4: Come From Away
I was not alive when the tragic 9/11 attacks happened. And because of that, I will never truly understand all the pain and loss. I will never understand the shock of people hearing about it that day, or how it changed the world. Come From Away is an important musical for people like me that know of 9/11 and the loss, but can’t connect to it. Even in the music alone, this musical amplifies the heart and emotions and allows people to connect to individuals through stories inspired by real events and real people’s experiences.
5: Hadestown
I have loved the music of Hadestown for years. I was waiting to see who won what Tony awards (for both this and Beetlejuice), and now that Hadestown has opened in the West End, I can’t wait to see it. While I don’t have tickets yet, I do plan to get some as soon as I can. I love Reeve Carney and Eva Noblezada on Broadway, and the following performers have been equally great as far as I know. However, Broadway is expensive and the West End is a place I can actually afford to go. The West End performers sounded stunning on the Big Night of Musicals show (and you can see their performance here). It only makes me so much more excited to see the show, and probably bawl my eyes out.
So, those are the five musicals I can’t wait to see, hopefully in the near future. Want to read a review of a musical I’ve seen recently? Check out my Wicked UK Tour post here.
