Poison Tides: Is The Sequel Worth Buying?

This blog post is a review of Poison Tides by Jay McGuiness. I am not affiliated with them. All opinions are my own.

The Wanted star, Jay McGuiness, forayed into writing with his debut YA fantasy novel, Blood Flowers. His sequel has been out roughly a month and I’ve finally read it and want to give my opinions. If you’re interested in the review of Blood Flowers, click here.

The Characters of Poison Tides

I liked how the characters were portrayed in this book. All of the characters on the boat with Bear had their own distinct personalities so even though there were a handful of characters, it was easy to differentiate between them.

The character development was done well and I like that Bear and Felix’s powers are not immediately perfect. I especially liked that Bear keeps making things grow because he’s so used to enlacing with the flowers.

However, I didn’t like Meya in this book. I’m not sure whether or not I am supposed to like her but I find her a little annoying but I’m hoping that is part of her character development and that in the next book, I will like her, or at least not dislike her.

Plot

The plot of Poison Tides is simple, help the witches free the witch that the Queen has captured in a cage. There is also a subplot involving Felix trying to get to the Free City which was fun and had some interesting revelations about the world. I also loved the plot twist at the end involving Bear’s mom and Megg.

While I found the beginning of the book a bit slow, it quickly picked up the pace and grew more interesting the more I read.

Book Formatting (Paperback Edition)

The book formatting for the paperback edition I brought was great. There was no misprints or any issues with the book that I could see.

The Ending of Poison Tides

I liked how this book ended, with certain characters together, ready to start the next part of the journey. The climax of the book left me wondering how the characters could possibly save themselves and I couldn’t put the book down. After how this book ended, I can’t wait to read the next book.

Overall Opinion of Poison Tides

Overall, this was a good sequel. As this is supposed to be the middle book of a trilogy, I am very glad that it didn’t suffer from a slow pace or a badly thought out world. I am only disappointed that it will be at least a year before I can read the next book.
