Lucky Day (Doctor Who Thoughts)

Lucky Day is the fourth episode of the new season of Doctor Who. It stars Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor and Varada Sethu as Belinda. However, the majority of the episode revolves around Millie Gibson returning as Ruby Sunday along with UNIT reappearing with Jemma Redgrave returning as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.

Spoilers ahead!!

General Thoughts

I was happy for Ruby Sunday and UNIT to return this episode. I also love the return of Ruby’s mum and gran, and I’m glad her biological mother was also included. UNIT were fantastic in this episode and I’m looking forward to their spin-off show.

Conrad was an interesting character and I feel he’s supposed to be similar to the people who look up to people like Andrew Tate and people who like making narratives that fit their viewpoints. I was super invested in Ruby and Conrad until the betrayal. I thought this was a bit exaggerated, but there are people out there who will act one was and then completely change on them, even if there are more people who are more subtle about their manipulations.

Issues

One of my issues with this episode isn’t the episode itself but the fact that it doesn’t feature the Doctor or Belinda in a large way despite the season revolving around him trying to get Belinda back home. It’s an annoying deviation even though I like Ruby and UNIT.

Just for the record, I still dislike the weird flirty relationship thing Kate has with the UNIT soldier.

Misc

This episode seemed to focus around the type of conspiracy theories people with come up with. It also makes a point to include news channels latching onto the conspiracy theories about UNIT. It seems very relevant with what happens in the real world now.

Overall Thoughts on Lucky Day

Overall, while I thought this episode was ultimately okay. I disliked the deviation from the Doctor and Belinda’s journey since I am way more invested in that currently but it’s an okay episode.

I am not sponsored or affiliated with the BBC or Disney, but watch Doctor who on bbciplayer or Disney+. Enjoy!
