Bat Out Of Hell: The Musical The Movie Review

Bat Out Of Hell: The Musical The Movie is now in cinemas for a limited run thanks to Cinema Live.

My Thoughts

There’s some wonderful moments that come from having a pro-shot of this show. It captures so many cute moments and brilliant facial expression that are hard to see from a distance. There were also some interesting choices, and overlaying the road that is usually shown on the screens above the stage over Strat during the instrumental of the song Bat Out Of Hell. However, it did get a bit much and didn’t look as good with the tire graphic in the centre of the screen.

I also loved that they used footage from the videographer they have on stage throughout the show anyway. I loved seeing the scenes that are usually on the screens in high definition, without the distortion and effects.

There were some issues with the video quality. The close up and videographer footage was brilliant, but the wide shot of the stage was noticeably bad, to the point that it was jarring. There was also a cut that was noticeably bad. The cut was from a zoomed in shot of Strat and Raven during I Would Do Anything For Love, and it cut to the same shot, just slightly zoomed out. There was also strange framing as sometimes the cameras were zoomed in a bit too far I’m not sure if it was a direction choice, but it was just a bit odd.

Another thing that was odd was that the sound mixing. The main vocals were loud and powerful, but the band were too quiet. One of the changes people loved about the latest tour was that the band was now on stage. For some bizarre reason, the band was mostly drowned out and was far too quiet. The ensemble were also very quiet, especially during act one.

Overall

Overall, Bat Out Of Hell: The Musical The Movie was okay. It doesn’t capture the joy of seeing the show live, but if you can’t attend live theatre, it was okay. It misses a lot of ensemble moments by focusing on the main performers, even when it doesn’t make sense to. For fans, they might find this disappointing. I know I did.
