Six: The Musical is a musical set up as a pop concert where the six wives of Henry the Eighth compete to see who should be the leader of the group. It is so popular that the last two times I tried to get tickets during its last UK tour, they were completely sold out. Songs from the musical also got popular on social media and it has gotten lots of people into theatre.
So, is Six: The Musical worth the hype?
Plot
The plot of Six is definitely not the strongest. It has a plot similar to Cats where the characters are competing for something. In this case, who gets to be the group leader based on who had the worst experience with the king I feel like the plot is mostly there to explain why every Queen has their own song and to provide witty jokes and banter between them. Even though the plot isn’t very complicated, it fits for what the show it.
Music of Six: The Musical
The music of Six is definitely pop. If pop songs are not your thing, you might not find the music too appealing. However, the songs cover a wide variety of pop music, with a ballad and one underscored with a catchy latin beat. Some of the songs are very fun and catchy, while some are very emotional. As I write this blog post, I’m still singing the songs. I know I’m going to keep listening to them and singing them for the next few days.
Visuals
Something that a lot of people know about Six is that the costumes are insane. As someone who sews for fun, I can only imagine the time and effort put into designing and making the costumes. They’re made of difficult materials but look stunning on stage. The fusion between plastic and modern materials with Tudor-inspired silhouettes is just right for a pop concert musical featuring Henry the Eighth’s six wives.
Overall Thoughts on Six: The Musical
Overall, I enjoyed this musical. The cast of the UK Tour that I saw, which included three alternates and a super swing, were amazing. It’s a fun show and is definitely a good time. Sometimes you just want a fun night out and Six definitely provides that. I can see why such a wide range of people love it, especially younger theatre goers with the style of jokes. So, personally, I can see why Six is worth the hype.
